Gigabit Ethernet(GE)

Gigabit Ethernet is the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard extension, the transmission speed of 1000 megabits per second (ie 1Gbps). Initially used in large campus network, can make existing 10Mbps Ethernet and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet link. It can replace the 100Mbps FDDI network, ATM technology is a strong opponent.
Between switches support Gigabit Ethernet, full duplex switch with terminal connection between the support half-duplex shared network connection, using repeaters and CSMA / CD collision detection mechanism.
Advantages of Gigabit Ethernet
Gigabit Ethernet uses the same CSMA / CD protocol, the same frame format, is to upgrade existing Ethernet the most natural way, so that the user devices on the Ethernet management tools, the original investment is preserved.
Gigabit Ethernet high-speed backbone network is another option. In data, voice, video and other real-time business, although it can not provide real quality of service (QoS), but high bandwidth Gigabit Ethernet, Ethernet overcome the weaknesses of the original provision of services to ensure that such characteristics.
Gigabit Ethernet Specifications
IEEE802.3Z Working Group has identified the following set of standards collectively known as 1000Base-X.
1000Base-LX: multi-mode optical fiber transmission distance is 550 meters, single-mode fiber transmission distance is 3000 meters.
 · 1000Base-SX: 62.5 micron multimode fiber transmission distance of 300 meters, 50 micron multimode fiber transmission distance is 550 meters.
· 1000Base-CX: Short Range Devices used for the connection, the use of high-speed twisted-pair copper cable, the maximum transmission distance of 25 meters.
· 1000Base-T: 5 class copper maximum transmission distance of 100 meters.
Gigabit Ethernet applications
Gigabit Ethernet Alliance (GEA) for Gigabit Ethernet application proposed the following programs:
* Update Fast Ethernet backbone: the core switch replacement, improve the existing network performance.
 * Used to switch the link to the server: server uses Gigabit Ethernet cards, Gigabit Ethernet switches directly connecting, providing millions of packets per second processing power.
 * Gigabit Ethernet to desktops. High-performance workstations, gigabit Ethernet card installed, directly connected with Gigabit Ethernet.
* For the link between the switches. Gigabit Ethernet switches with fiber phase, providing a high trunk line.
FDDI trunk * Update: keep the existing cable, 10-fold increase bandwidth
