Windows Internet Naming Server(WINS )

WINS is a Windows Internet Naming Server, the Windows Internet Naming Service. It provides a distributed database environment can be dynamically routed to the network of IP addresses and the mapping of NETBios name registration and inquiries. WINS to register NetBIOS computer name, and resolve it when needed as IP addresses. WINS database is updated dynamically.
The basic requirements WINS
The WINS server
1. Must be a NT server computer
2. Using the TCP / IP protocol, and has a static IP address.
For WINS clients
1. Requirement is a computer running the following operating systems:
 Windows NT Server 3.5 or higher
Windows NT Workstation 3.5 or higher
Windows 95
Running Microsoft TCP/IP-32 the Windows for Workgroups 3.11
With the real mode TCP / IP driver Microsoft Network Client 3.0 for MS-DOS
LAN Manager 2.2c for MS-DOS. Does not support LAN Manager 2.2c for OS / 2
2. Need WINS server's IP address
WINS process
(A) in a WINS environment, each WINS client turn on the computer and initialize the TCP / IP, it will be its NetBIOS name and IP address mapped to the corresponding relationship between WINS server database.
(B) When a WINS client wants to communicate with another host, it will link directly with WINS server, query the computer name and IP address of the relationship.
 (C) If the WINS server is found in their database, the computer name and IP address checked the mapping, it will aim to return the computer's IP address requirements of the query WINS clients.
