Bootstrap agreement (the BOOTP) is a based on IP/UDP protocol agreement, it can let no disk from a central server station get IP address, for LAN in the distribution of dynamic IP address workstation no disk, it doesn't need to each user to place a static IP address. Use the BOOTP protocol, generally includes the bootstrap protocol server and bootstrap agreement client two parts.

The agreement mainly used to have no disk workstation LAN, client access IP addresses are as follows: first, the process of by the BOOTP starting client start-up code, this time client is not IP address, use with IP address broadcast to network 255.255.255.255 issued IP address inquires requirements. Then, run the BOOTP protocol server receives the request, according to the MAC address supplied in the request, and find the client sends a contain IP address, server IP address, gateway of information such as his frame. Finally, according to the client may TFTP server to through special frame download start image files, modeled as disk boot.

This RFC describe a IP/UDP guide agreement (the BOOTP), allow a no disk client found himself, the server's IP address of host addresses, and into a named file into memory and run. Guide operation have two component phases.
The first stage RFC description: 'distribution address and choose guide file'.
In gaining address and filename information, came into the lead after the second phase: file transfer.
File transfer generally use TFTP agreement, because two phases are lives in client PROM.
But the BOOTP can also with other agreements such as SFTP or FTP work together.
We suggest that client PROM software provides a complete without the user interaction guide ways.
This is a kind of unattended on electric start way.
Must provide a mechanism to let users manual provide address and filename information bypass the BOOTP protocol enter directly file transfer stage.
If to provide a variable storage, we suggest there to save Settings to bypass the BOOTP protocol until these Settings lead to file transfer phase failure.
If a cache of information failure, guide fall back into the first phase and use the BOOTP.
